leena's comments on todays commencement speech

everyone had their own experiences to share and it was nice hearing it.i felt that speakers like angeline, christin, jacky, sharmila, and vivian made it sound like their memories during two years in inti was worth the while and they will carry it with them in their hearts.i felt that they spoke meaningful things about their college experience for the past two years in inti.it was spoken from their inner heart with feelings.the rest of the speakers did well except for mekalah who did not managed to finish her speech because of Esther kind of shocked her about the time and that mek got stunned and did not know what else to say which was said abrupt by Ms.Cheryl.but no matter what, mek still managed to catch the audiences attention with the way she spoke and presented.she was not nervous but she had the confidence.Ahsan and Michael really made the day with their crazy acts as usual which was kind actually interesting because everyone was enjoying watching the way this both were on the stage speaking and doing their crazy acts.it grabbed audience attentions.good job to everyone who presented and no matter where you guys go dont forget the fun times in inti the fello carzy friends in inti.cheersssssss!!!!!

Commencement Speech

To the graduating class of 2010. :) We all had a chance to give our graduation speech.I know it was a terror for me to stand on that stage, being unable to breathe. A very terrible experience!! What nightmare. Oh well, there's always room for improvement. :)

Here are some of the snapshots during the commencement speech.

Apologies, fellow classmates.

Hey people,

we will have our commencement speech on Tuesday morning.
Supposedly to be our "last day" of college.

How's the preparation going eh? Try not to make everyone weep from the memories written in our memory book. :) Short, sweet, simple and memorable.

By the way, I am really sorry for not uploading any of the videos or audio. It is mostly my fault. I apologize. Especially to Ms Cheryl. I know you've been pushing me. I really have not idea how to create an external link to upload all our recorded speeches. All I can think of is to upload on youtube or some audio website then embed in our blog. Still, we need a separate page to keep all our speech information cause this posts will be quite redundant and will be pushed back according the dates.

So, if anyone has the coding skills (HTML) to create a new page, teach me eh. I'm not much of IT savvy.

sincerely,
angeline [:

Pinch me and I'll weep BAWL

1.Has the blog been helpful in the process of learning?
Indeed, I find blogging about classmate's presentation does make a positive effects as there is a lot space of improvements needed. Through this we learn about minute mistakes or gestures presented that are not fond to audience thus we improvise and make initiative to avoid them. Negative feedbacks enable me/us to strive harder for the next presentation, whilst positive ones last a minute only. Despite that, this blog has outgrown us and connect the class as one rather than other ordinary lectures with ten thousand pages of notes and black-white slides. This is unique.

2. Is there a need for improvement?
It is never enough. Nothing can ever satisfy one thus yes, there is space for improvements. More interactivity should be introduced despite the busy schedule of each individuals, perhaps a least commitments/burdens of one thousand words essay is a no go. A brief and simple fifty words will do them good. Visual aids, more FUN FUN FUN facts/issues/topics should be introduced to ignite human interest. Tips for better presentation skills (with a fun approach) serve better to enhance the blog.

3. Suggestions?
Ah, wish I read this earlier. But yeahh, as written above.

Christin

AMY SPEAKIING! :)

1.Has the blog been helpful in the process of learning?
I personally think that this blog has been useful, by using the comments from others and for others to improve myself in the speeches done. I've listened and read some comment from others and improving my speeches from the comments.
However, I think in terms of outsoide sources about Presentation has not been updated in the blog by all the others. And i think it should be useful for all when extra information from out there is being uploaded in the blog.

2. Is there a need for improvement?
There is a need of improvement from all. And if any of you need any pictures of yourself or of your friends, there is for most of us that has presented in different speeches. And even recodrings :D

3. Suggestions?
There is no suggestions from me, and i think that everyone did have loads of improvements in this subjects! Agreed? :D

Loads love,
Amy:)

My Feedbacks :)

1.Has the blog been helpful in the process of learning?
Yeah, this blog has been really helpful in the process of learning. The blog allows us to give comment on other speakers as well as getting comments from the audience. Sometimes when we missed any of our classmate's presentation, we can just read the blog to check out what has happened in class. Besides that, this blog gave us an advantage as we are allowed to ask the lecturers question after class or at anytime. This saves us from staying back after class or waiting for the lecturer's consultation time.

2. Is there a need for improvement?
I find that not all speakers are being reviewed in the blog. So some of us might not know where they did good or bad and they do not know in which aspect that they needed to improve.

3. Suggestions?
Videos and audio is definitely going to make this blog more interesting. And with audio and video, it makes the review easier and also allow us to refer back to the previous and previous presentations.

Melissa

Gary in the house!

1. Has the blog been helpful in the process of learning?
Yeaps, I do agree that it helps as we dont see our classmates like everyday. We come from different cliques and groups. From this blog, we manage to be closer and view the comments about our presentation as we go online. So yea, i think it is a good process of learning, eventhough not much comments bout me :(

2. Is there a need for improvement?
Yes, I think that we need to have a video recorder or something, cause I cant seem to remember ALL the presentation.

3. Sugguestions?
For some people, we can watch it even if we missed the classes. Reasons or excuses, as long as everyone learned.
1. Has the blog been helpful in the process of learning?

Yes, personally I think the blog definitely has been helpful in the process of learning. It’s a new interacting way with others but it helps to improve the speaker by listening other’s opinion and suggestions as well. I have to say that not all of us in the class are talkative so this blog helps for those who didn’t voice out their comments and opinions directly. At the same time, we are able to know how other’s opinion about our speeches. From here, we can work on it and try to improve our presentation skills.

2. Is there a need for improvement?

I’ve went through some reviews that posted up by our classmates but sadly I didn’t manage to find any review on my speechesL. The blog will be more interesting if everyone post their reviews on every speaker. Some of us are not active in this blog and I have to admit I’m one of themJ. So maybe we can spend more time on this blog to make it more interesting?

3. Do you have any suggestions?

This blog is boring because there are no photos up here. Reading all the words are bored so if we can upload some photos perhaps it would be better and grabs more attention.
This class is fun even though I feel nervous and anxious every time when I’m waiting for my turn. But it’s so much relief after I finish it. Few more weeks left guys so keep it up!

and learn from them.

2. Is there a need for improvement?

Yes. Everyone is not superman, they cannot remember
everything happened in the class.

3. Do you have any suggestions?

Feedback

Hello everyone! Big Mike is here :P

Finally i am opening this blog, which i should be doing ever since its created, but you all know me.

Well, this blog is effective because we receive comments from others which is able to help us in our mistakes. Good or bad, that's comment but its for the best for all of us. Cause when anyone gives their opinion on the speeches, it shows that the person cares and also wants us to be the best at what we do. So i agree that this blog is effective and another thing is that, all the comments are actually a form of learning, that is learning your audience by knowing what are they thinking, what they expect from you and what they want to hear. Its a way to improve yourself.

Improving is very crucial when we are doing something new in life, it makes it feel good, productive and also we know that we on the right track. And it comes when your persistent and also with passionate at what you do. No denying that we all start out a little shaky at the beginning, but i know now for sure that the feeling of nervous, fear and all that are behind us. Judging by all the speeches that we have done. We became better, and guys we did a fantastic job! But, that doesn't mean it stops there. We still need to improve.

No suggestions. Its all good.

PS: I just want to say that i am not a fan of presentations. I had skipped so many presentation in my times before i met you all, and probably that's the reason why i am still here. I really hated it and when I heard it was a subject, the amount of cursing that I did and the level of frustration and anger that I am in can tear down a building. Over ain't it but yes its true. So the day came and so did the subject, and as the day goes by sitting going through it, I think that presentation is really cool, great and jovial classmates, easy going, funny, sweet and sometimes out of the blues strict mode teacher, the experience is amazing.

The speeches were great, fantastic job done by everyone and also the topics. It is so interesting and can say that its the reason why everyone put their effort researching about it and the eagerness of want to present it to the rest of the class. Each and everyone presented it had their own style which was very entertaining and awesome.

And i would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you for those, (referring to everyone) who does their presentation or speech before me . Reason being is that through the speech that you gave and how it was conducted, i learn alot from it and also got me motivated to improve myself when I'm going to mine. Thank you guys.

A little emotional, its very unlikely of me but its right from the heart :)

Yours sincerely

Laura's Feedback~

1. Has the blog been helpful in the process of learning?
Yea, it's a new and effective way for the students to learn about how to improve themselves by listening to other people's opinions and suggestions. This blog is actually like a mirror and it tells us how other people look at us and how other people think about us.

2. Is there a need for improvement? If yes, what would it be?
Hope all of us can be more active in participating ourselves in this blog. Besides that, maybe we can write down the opinions and thoughts in point form because I find it quite boring to read the whole paragraph and there are so many posts for us to read.

3. Do you have any suggestions?
Put more gadgets at the sidebar! Can I add some pictures or Chat box? Hehe. And agree with Jasmine, hope miss can post some advices or opinions in this blog. I think everybody is longing to read that=)

Laura Loh

Meg's feedback

Q1. Yes, I personally feel the blog has been a useful tool in the learning process. It helps us to interact with each other in an effective way. Blog motivates us to learn and be consistent. It’s a great idea and should be a classroom teaching technique. I feel every lecturer should put into practice.

Q2. Yes, I think everyone in the class should take part in commenting on each other on the blog. In my opinion Miss should make it clear and serious that everyone must contribute or they be penalize. For example I’m one of them as I’m not a very active blogger. We has Students should use blogs to summarize what we have learned in class as well comparing and contrasting each other’s work.

Q3. I agree to jasmine that miss should can also post some comments up on how our speech went on in class. Besides that I think is great way to keep in touch with each other and I hope miss will not only stop here but guide us through till we graduate.

I really love this class so much. Every week I look forward in attending class. I realize how far we all have come after attending this class. So many new skills and technique we have learn along the journey. AWESOME!! I going to dearly miss it when this semester over’s.

Feedback

1. Has the blog been helpful in the process of learning?
Yes, the blog has been most helpful in the process of learning. Reason being that each and everyone of my classmates may have a different opinion on how my speech has been given, and through the feedback given by them, I am able to reflect on their comments given and find new ways of improving.

2. Is there a need for improvement? If yes, what would it be?
I would think yes, there is room for improvement. After reading posts that have been submitted by my fellow classmates I find that some of us are not very active on this blog. I do admit that I am one of them..haha. Yes, we may be very busy with projects and assignments, but hopefully we can contribute more to the blog to make it more interesting instead of just commenting on our classmate's speeches.

3. Do you have any suggestions?
Maybe Ms Cheryl can also post some comments up on how our speeches went so that know how well or badly we have performed from a professional.

-Jasmine Saw-

Esther's Feedback

1. Has the blog been helpful in the process of learning?
Fairly so. I think it's a good way to give comments/criticism to each other, because we may be too shy or cannot spontaneously do so during class. It's also a pretty good thing to read them, because you get multiple perspectives and can learn from each other.

2. Is there a need for improvement? If yes, what would it be?
It's a bit much, but it might have been better if everyone were to provide feedback on each speaker? So everyone gets to say their piece to Christin's speech, and every speaker after her, something like that? That way we can understand our audiences better and know what they want to hear.

3. Do you have any suggestions?
How about doing more skits? Hahaha that'd be fun!
Hmm, well basically online learning can be effective if everyone really puts effort so yea, I think blogs are helpful for people who dare not voice out everything to everybody face to face or so straight-forwardly. It has helped us to communicate indirectly about how we see each other and how we portray up on stage. Blogs doesn't directly answers a NO to effective online learning. We ourselves can make things happen but it is just a matter of fact whether how willing are people to do so.

All these can be improved if all of us spare the time to be more active because feedbacks are important to make communications successful right? I think this blog has helped me to know how different audiences have different opinions towards different speeches and speakers. :)

Students involved should speak their mind out more since we're mixed of different sems and we're quite into each other's semester rather than mixing around the whole class.

But I guess we've done a great job here! It's so much more posts than I expected!
Well, keep it up guys!

Loves!
Janice

Dear classmates...

1. Has the blog been helpful in the process of learning?

In my opinion, this blog is very helpful in process of learning. WHY? This is because each of us have to comment and write it on this blog so that it can be shared among us. Besides this, this actually makes us to pay more attention on what they have to say in front. This gives us lots of information on things that we do not know in this world. It actually gives us lots of good and extraordinary information to be shared around. In addition, it actually helps us to remember the information easier as there's a little humorous that had added in.

2. Is there a need for improvement? If yes, what would it be?
YUP, there's some space that is needed to be improve in. As we see there's not many of us commenting on each other's post and not much post had been updated. This is because lots of us are busy with our own project including me. BUT, somehow with a little time we can make this blog looks interesting.

3. Do you have any suggestions?
This class is going to end soon and is pretty wasted as now only we started to get used to each of us and the environment between us where it makes all of us so comfortable while presenting where this makes the class so funny and interesting to learn. So for me i would like to continue this class if possible.

In conclusion, we did a great job. So people, please continue putting more effort in it.

Sincerely,
Yuen Pui Mun

Rachel

Well, this blog has been one of the must on webpage for me ever since it is created because I want to know about what others think about my speech. It certainly helped because my classmates give constructive criticism every now and then for me to improve.

I think it would have been great if we add in video clips of how we presented so that we can know what kind of habits we have and minimize it in future.

Dear blog...

I think this blog really helps students to give feedbacks to other students, whether positive or negative. We actually really care about what people say and feel about us. We can use this opportunity to improve. This blog wasn't very active probably because everyone were busy with other work, including me. Overall, I think we did a great job in this class and this blog.

Good work guys!

Cheers.

-Jacky-
The blog is useful because now we get to share ideas and also see what mistakes we had made and try to improve it for the better. Where are the audio's ???

-Melvin-

Mr Discreet

I felt that you should put more examples to deliver your point. Your topic about uniforms is very interesting, which you could use more funny ideas that relate to your topic and explain to your audience. Try not to take a long pause each time, if you are hesitating to find idea to explain to your audience try and ask them a question which can make them think or response]

Oral Test!!!!!

Nyahahaha. Back with comments.

Vivian

Her speech was a little last minute because she had another class earlier. I had the chance of listening to her speech before she did it in front of the class. She also didn't have the chance to show her slides due to time constraint.

Her points and topic of speech is very interesting. "Embrace your chubbiness". This is definatelt an eye opener for everyone. The topic was very different from others as I noticed a lot of people was talking about beauty. Which is the main issue today.

Well, besides that, I noticed that she look a little messed up because she didn't get to show her slides and was rushing in. Overall I thought that her message was good. Gestures is not bad and have quite good eye contact with others.

Christin

HAHA. This one is VERY memorable. Her hobby about killing frogs is a little bit scary. (I hope she is not like that to humans). But this speech caught everyone's attention. Which is a good thing.

P/S: Don't kill any frogs anymore!!!! =)

Cheers!

Big Mike's oral test!

I was really, really surprised by Michael's speech during his oral test! In a good way, of course. =)

But then again, so far, all his speeches are good.

So Big Mike was talking about places to see before you die, and he turned up places like the Pyramids, Great Wall of China, Grand Canyon etc. but what really blew me away was the facts that he gave with it.

Honestly? I think he really managed to present his facts in a fun way. He really kept me interested throughout the presentation, and his pictures were pretty spot on too (if it wasn't for the annoying projector cable that messed up the colours).

To say the least, I'm a kinda fan for Big Mike's speeches. He's got some cool quality about him that makes me want to listen to what he says, probably because he always feels strongly about whatever topic he's talking about, so that really leaps out at me and makes me sit up and listen.

Improvement? I think he's cool. Though he should know that he doesn't have to run through the info on his slides all the time. If he's mentioned it already, then just move on. I think that would've saved him a good minute or two, maybe? He could have used that time for chatting with the audience, like getting to know where they wanna go before they kick the bucket and so on.

But all in all? Great! Just wish he wouldn't disappear after class so quickly so I can pass him the congratulations on a job well done!

Oral Test 110310

Thanks for the comments :) I will improve in my next speech *prays* :D

The following comment will be on two speakers I've picked for the week :)

Janice :)
I think that Janice was very soft spoken, and I could not hear some points. And i went like "Huh, what did she just say?" I could not really hear. But I the pictures that she put up on the slides are good =) Good choice of topic too, did not expect such topic to come across :) *claps*

Next..

Jasmine :)
YEAH! Go green PPL! :) *Hi-5* Although alot of us might know about the enviroment right now, but I think Jasmine was reminding people about what's happening right around us, and that what we are going through is bad and could be improved. However, Jasmine, could put up pictures on slides, so that your speech and the pictures will impact more on listeners. :)

Thank you.

Cheers,
amyng ;)

Oral Test

... and present one type of speech (persuasive, entertaining, factual etc) for the oral test ...

Perhaps my speech falls under etc. Don't be bias, admit it that my speech was entertaining *grins*

P.S, Stories were made up. I always sit there and watch while Bro Simon does his "thing".

SO ANYWAY....

Amy's

Graffiti - WOW! Her selection of topic was unique, not of those cliche ones. By getting the class to write their names on a recycled paper (Go Green yo!) and explaining how graffiti came about was catchy, yeap you got my attention on that. Amy's presentations is always serious but informative, perhaps you should try being the Cute Side of Amy (to humor the crowd) and be more relaxed because when you were up there, I see the other side of Amy. Which is good in a way, but you have the capability to cheer the crowd. Utilize them?

Angeline's

Courage. When Angeline came to me (WE SHOULD REALLY BAN THE WORD CAME/COME) and asked what I think about Courage, I was like, "Surprise me Angeline, what are you gonna talk about courage?". I thought she might start teaching us how to get your courage hyped, but her approach was different and creative. Not just her content, the way she presented her speech was really convincing. Getting ordinary individual's perception on courage was cool, especially when the actual fact from the individual was finding courage to commit suicide. Twisted eh? Also, I've watched Nick Vujicic's video before, and it made me cried (yes Gary, I admit it) and it is a super motivational video to watch when you're feeling down. (perhaps we should get the whole class to watch the whole complete video since we were all super-ci-fied stressed over assignments, tests, projects and MC Day/MC Exhibition) Andddd ah ha! Using the wireless mouse to change slide, that was cheeky! Could have used mine also eh? But yeah, Angeline's presentation was a good one.

Fancy Days~

Now, I'm gonna review on selected speakers today. Oral test, free topic. How we all manage to pull this test off?

Christin.
She chose a topic that is very closely related to her which became her bonus. No need to memorize unnecessary facts nor figures to back her topic up. Having a hobby to kill pests. I'll definitely not forget this Christin. You opened new perspective of hobbies in my 'jakun' mind. She made a great impact through her speech. Though the effect, impact of her speech was no doubt a good one, but the topic selected grossed out most of us. That's not something pleasing to listen in the morning, in my first class and at the same time I was nervous about my upcoming speech.

Yes, selection of topic is not a wise one. But as a speaker now, her facial expression was very convincing. She touched a little of our emotions when she spoke about her first kill of the frog where the gate sliced it into two. Grrr.. Typing this out gave me goosebumps. Message delivered were very clear. And definitely, she's got everyone's attention. Something that's quite hard to achieve as a speaker.

Jeremy

What is love to you? Eros, Agape, Storge.. etc. Jeremy did quite a good teaser before it was his turn to present. He gave out little pieces of heart to the audience on the right and ask to write how we define love. Some of us were quite excited when we received that little heart.
For a topic about love, it should be something very closely related to everyone. But the way Jeremy presented love is like some sort of dry facts which sort of making the audience to lose their interest. There was a moment, in the beginning where the crowd were excited, Jeremy lost control of the audience who was discussing about the topic out loud among one another. He settled it by ignoring the audience and continued his speech. I think he should address to the audience properly and tell them that he's going to move on to such and such points.

However, yes Jeremy, you did improve. Don't get too discourage by my comments. It's just the content. But the way he presented was good. It was obvious for a moment that he was a little nervous but he managed to carry on with his speech slowly and smoothly. I think he should be familiarize with the facts instead of looking at the cue cards most of the times.

Don't give up Jeremy!

.angeline :)

Oral Test- 9 March 2010

I will be commenting on some of the speakers that have delivered their speech today.

Pui Mun
In my opinion, I think that she could've presented her speech better. One of the reasons being that there were many grammatical errors and wrong usage of certain words. As a suggestion, I think that Pui Mun could ask someone else to check her speech for grammatical errors before she takes to the floor. Besides that, I feel that as a presenter, she shouldn't have used vulgarities. I felt that using vulgarities during her speech had made the entire speech seem less serious/professional.

However, I did like the fact that she chose a topic that is not commonly discussed, which was to point out the dangers of being a beauty contestant. I have also realized that Pui Mun has the ability to stand in front of an audience and feel comfortable, I think that being able to do this is great and I believe that she can be a great presenter with the confidence and humour she posseses. With a little more practice she can do wonders. (:

Rachel
I was quite taken aback with Rachel's performance on the floor today. I have noticed that she has made a lot of improvements during this speech compared to the last few. For example, the flow of her speech and her hand gestures. However, there is still more room for improvement. Kudos on the progress!

Christin
All in all, I think Christin is a good presenter. She has he gestures and her movement under control and as a speaker, she has the ability to capture her audiences attention when she speaks. Although I'm not one for animal cruelty as a hobby to pass time, I felt that Christin's speech was more entertaining and shocking instead of being persuasive. I think the subject of her speech today went a little off topic. Yes, it did capture the audience's attention with it's gory details, but the objective of the speech we are to present is suppose to be about persuading the audience. ( Correct me if I am wrong)

So maybe in the future, remember to keep in mind the reason or objective of our speech. Don't worry, we all make those sort of mistakes sometimes. (:

PS: Please don't kill anymore frogs and cats! Haha.

Till then,
Jasmine Saw

Rachel, Annie, and Meg's

For today's oral test, I would like to comment to Rachel, Annie, and Meg's speech.

Rachel
I like the fact that she took a different approach in explaining why moral subjects should not be implemented in tertiary educations. She mentioned out the situation we are experiencing subconsciously and I think that this is a very good argument. But there's one thing that attracts my eye, which is her clasped hand. Rachel pls pay attention to your hands! Lol. Overall, I think you've improved a lot!

Annie
For beauty is a crime, I find it interesting when people can relate to themselves and she made me realize that men can also be beautiful. And same as Rachel, Annie should beware of clasping the hand together and make a sound out of it. Also is to beware of pronouncing kilograms rather than kilometres. Haha. It's a humorous speech tho. :)

Meg
Well, Meg's been using good examples of daily stereotypes which really amaze people that all of them are FACTS. I also like her good projection of voice but I think she should fold the pages of the magazine so she wouldn't seem so nervous flipping through the magazine. Either way, I like the way of how she can persuade people to believe or do something!

Janice

Should music be FREE?

Comment on Vivian's speech...

In my personal opinion, Vivian's topic - Should music be FREE? is an interesting topic as nowadays most teenagers would download all sorts of their favourite music into their ipod. Vivian had gave her reasonable reason as a teenager why we would want the music to be free. And i totally agree on it as WHY SHOULD WE PAY FOR THE MUSIC THAT WE LIKE TO LISTEN?

In addition, she added some part of the lyrics from Eminem and Mariah Carey to make the presentation goes a little humorous as she even rap it out! This is where she capture the class's attention and everybody laugh and clap on her presentation.

Besides that, she even showed her amazing slides and she shows how well prepared is she during the presentation. Moreover, she had been improving in semester by semester as in her this time presentation, she did not paused anymore by saying "EM" and "EM"...(if you guys notice it from the 1st semester)

Anyway, in conclusion her presentation was interesting and nice! GOOD JOB VIVIAN!

-Yours Sincerely-

Comment on Jacky Speech

First of all, I think that Jacky's topic is an interesting topic. Sex, drugs, rock and roll has been a major issue for all teenagers nowadays. Overall the speech was good, and the points are well delivered as we can understand from his slides already. But I feel that Jacky dint really emphasize on the effects that it brings to the society. Maybe can improve by asking our classmate for examples or point out a current issue that we are facing recently.

Overall, I totally understand the message that you are trying to persuade us and how sex, drugs, rock and roll is an addiction towards teenagers. I would like to say that you did a very good job in delivering the speech and look forward to hear more from you.

-Melvin-

Like, whoa!

Little note to say THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR REVIEWS! (and that's a lot of reviews...oh my)

I'm really surprised by how many reviews there were on my polygamy speech. Did you guys like it that much? Aiyoyo! One wife/husband is enough problem la weiiii don't marry more! Want to die ah? LOL

Now I'm not bragging, so please don't get me wrong. But in response to a lot of your comments, here's a few uhh things I do for "proper bullshitting".

1) Prepare. Make sure you know your topic really well. Keep asking yourself questions as you go about preparing for your topic, like "Will my audience be bored if I tell them this?" stuff like that.

2) I didn't like my topic. Totally against it, but I suppose you just act like you do. You try and think about it from the opposite side, and try talking like them. Or pretending to believe. Like I was reading up on all those experts who support polygamy, and so I kinda forced myself to think like them.

3) Run the speech through in your head. Imagine it! Imagine yourself talking in front of your audience and doing really well. Experiment with your gestures and walking all in your head and try and imagine your audience's reaction. Works! If you can't imagine it, use a mirror. REALLY WORKS. Haha! I actually do the mirror thing. =P

4) That butterflies-in-your-tummy thing? That I-wanna-vomit-now feeling, the I-NEED-TO-PEE-NOW feeling, the I-WANNA-DIE-NAO feeling... I get it too. My knees shake, my hands shake, my voice eventually shakes, eventually my jaw starts chattering and I look like I'm on vibrating mode. I think all of you saw that especially during my first speech.

For me, jumping works to calm my nerves. Or I keep telling myself its gonna be fine, I'm gonna go out there and have fun... and that feeling seriously doesn't leave so I end up trying to "like" that feeling. I mean, it's the same feeling you get when you sit on roller-coasters, so if you can like taking a ride like that, you can learn to like that stage-fright feeling. It's like learning to eat your veggies!

5) I forgot my lines. Happened to me! Probably will happen every single time I speak too. So just move on. "If you're gonna do something wrong, do it like a pro." Keep yourself and your face totally cool and chill, so no one will know that you made a mistake. Just pretend your some hotshot and you're in control and just talk on.

6) Finally, DON'T THINK ABOUT IT!!! You've prepared your slides, your cue cards, you know your topic, you got caught by your mom practising in front of the mirror and now she thinks you're nuts...Great! So when you actually start saying "Goodmorning, Miss Cheryl...." STOP THINKING ABOUT YOUR SPEECH. Stop thinking about the audience, we're all just stumps of wood. Your brain and body know what to do, so just blabber away, you'll do fine! Just remember to look out for the timekeeper, for his/her "FIVE" sign, and then you're done. It's over! And you can go down to the canteen and get some nuggets for a job well done!

7) Time-wasters. As timekeeper, I know a lot of you don't have problems getting past the 5 minute mark. But if you find it difficult- USE PICTURES. Like me, I learnt it actually takes time to paste up a photo on the board and explain it. Hahahaha! Secret out!

TELL A STORY. It's like plan B. So while you're preparing, go find a story related to your topic. Or tell your own story. Or even better, waste MORE TIME by doing this to your audience:

"So everyone, I want you all to imagine with me that you're a lab rat. What would you be doing?" -ask some people-

"Okay. How would you feel as a lab rat?" -ask some people-

"Great! So you're with all your other lab rat buddies, and suddenly this doctor comes and takes your buddy away! What do you do?" -ask some people-

"How would you feel?" -ask some people-

Like that! Hahaha! Sure, its pretty obvious you're wasting time, but hey, at least you're getting your audience involved. You should get more marks for that? =P

Hope this helps everyone, all the best for your Oral Test!

Love is in the air tonight

Dear whoever created this blog,

I would like to thank you and on behalf of class COM 2115 as well, for actually killing your precious time in creating this blog. If you who created this is a girl then I would like to take you on a date but if your a guy,

ummmm well....lets consider it as a blind date. Literally BLIND!

ahsan
speak from the heart :)
till then.

Yo Esther, Polygamy Origami

I LOVE EVERYONE IN COM 2115, yea including you too, Yea you, don't act like you don't know.

Sorry for the late review ladies and gentlemen and others if there is. Well the title says it all. As I browsed through the blog, I saw some reviews on Esther's speech and I thought I was the only one who didn't Esther's topic which is "Polygamy". Don't worry Christin, as Christin said the first thing that crossed her mind when she heard the word Polygamy was Polygons. Well, I thought Esther was going to talk about Origamis!

I was all hyped up and excited to fold some origamis especially when she said we all are going to learn something new today. I thought she was going to pass us papers and start folding! I mean I my got folding skills ready, got a picture of a duck in my head to fold already and monkeys, DINOSAURS but when she said "well Polygamy is when one man having more than one wife".
I was like WHAT?! with my caveman face on, SO NO FOLDING MONKEYS?!

Anyways, I understood clearly the message that she was giving out to everyone. She really got my 6 minutes attention since I have a short term span of attention. (I kind of lost you in the middle of your presentation, that was because i was thinking "What if Ahsan have 4 wives and monkeys").

The reason why I made such title is because she made it clear and presented it step by step like how she would want to teach an origami folding to a noob learner.

So yea, Esther congratulations for getting my attention and you should special because its once in a blue moon to actually get my attention on a topic and i'm sure the class was nodding their heads about your presentation on Polygamy.

Thank you

Peace Out

Dear Mr. Discreet

I'm actually commenting on Chee Hui. I think he is just lack of confidence. He told me that he spent quite some time to memorize his speech before the actual presentation. I think it is no use memorizing if you are not familiar with the topic. Try relating the topic with yourself or anything close to you and I think you can remember it better.

I also think Chee Hui was very brave to stop the presentation half way for a second chance. I've seen people who just became blank in front and didn't even try for a second chance. Don't worry so much. We are all there to learn and nobody is perfect. Just relax and stay focus then you can make it. No offence alright...

Take a deep breathe...

Esther & Janice

Hey all! Crazy how fast a week just flies by us isn't it? I'm sitting here, going through the library of film reels in my head, each containing something that happened, events that took place, things that were said. I've finally found the section that has all our speeches on it and as I go through them, reel by reel, the ones that has the most impact are Esther's and Janice's.

Esther
I thought Esther carried herself very well. There was a little bit of everything in her speech; humour, information, persuasiveness. I like the way she wasn't really trying to change anyone's minds, rather just make them see things from a different perspective, whether you choose to acknowledge it or not was up to you. It was a risk but a risk that was worth it. The big 'ahh' moment was the twist in her speech. When she 1st said polygamy should be legalised I was thinking "Was she mental?!" But when I saw/heard the perspective in which she was speaking in, her points, there were absolutely brilliant! Genius really, she took all of us by surprise and that was really cool. It made me think "Crap she's good, I want to have that much response for my audience too." And that's definitely a good thing. I wished to have maybe seen her in more formal clothes and maybe spread around the room a little bit more but other than that, Good job Esther! And congratulations on the internship speech, you deserved it! ;)

Janice
Wow. I liked hers alot! Why? Well first off, she took a different approach. Rather than projecting her voice till China could probably hear her (which some of us do) she went for the quiet but confident approach; People paid attention to what she had to say. She stood in one place, paced slightly and didn't have her hands doing the macarena (which I do) and although she was dressed in semi-formal, she was still has a professional air about her. Her voice, her gestures, her dressing were smooth, quiet and steady. It made me feel very zen haha. I honestly don't remember her stuttering. Her topic was interesting and like Esther, she put a twist to it and I felt that was creative. A risk, but a risk that was worth it. I liked the fact that she took snippets from "The Art Of War" and admitted that she hasn't finished it. I LOVED her 'daughter sick' analogy which gave everyone a personal connection with the topic, especially the girls cause I think we all have dad's like that; control macho but such babies when we're not around lol. Good work Janice!

Now that I'm done watching these reels, I have to place them back in their respective shelves, close the doors to the library of my head and go out there to make new entries for the other countless film reels of memories. Make the most of the day guys! God bless and see you Tuesday!

Toodles,
Pauline

Review on Esther's Speech

Esther's speech on polygamy is one that I find very interesting and really grabs my attention. Polygamy was one word that I have never come across to until Esther starts telling it. Knowing that most of her audience have no idea on what polygamy is, Esther makes her explanation easy to understand plus showing pictures of different types of polygamy was indeed attention grabbing and making her speech even more informative.

Of course, she did not forget to involve the audience as the speech goes on. She knows when and how to interact with the audience and keeps the audience listening to her. Throughout the whole speech, the response from the audience and the interaction was very good.

She is very confident in presenting and not feeling nervous at all. Even though it is a persuasive speech, the way she presented was very relaxed and laid back, but without failing to persuade the audience. This is one thing i admire.

In general, I think Esther did a very good job in her persuasive speech. =)

Christin's Speech

Christin's speech is about Virginity Pledges. Her speech are very interacting with the audiences by asking question and providing examples from movies.

The hand gestures are good just that her eye contact only focuses on the left and middle part of the audiences. She needed to make eye contact to all the audiences more =) other than that, her leg movement is okay.

She is very relax while the speech goes on and the content of the speech are quite organize. Most importantly, she did not use cue cards to conduct her presentation and she has courage to do this type of topic.

if it is for me, i won't dare to do because it is not an easy topic to conduct =)

In overall Christin's speech are very persuasive and interactive as she uses examples from movies. Congrats Christin!

Persuasive Comment - Esther Ho's

I ran my finger through the keyboard and sigh. It's been 5 minutes since, and all I could remember was Esther's speech, Polygamy. Esther's speech was catchy and very interesting that's why I could remember hers. Despite that she didn't manage to show the pictures she had but I felt that the 7 minutes has been an interesting and informative one.

I have to admit that I thought Polygamy was a Polygon thing. It's stupid but that was the first thing that stroke into my mind. Yeah laugh it out. But at the moment Esther mentioned that "you might learn something new today (or something)", I felt "boomed".

So anyway, I did learn new stuffs like polygyny and polyandry. And I have to say that I agree when she mentioned that not only Men can marry more than one wife, SO DOES THE WOMEN! Living in the world where men and women are tally (no longer the traditional perception of Men the dominant species), women has the right to stand where men once stood.

Her body gesture was good. Her phrases was catchy, interesting photos (with tac-it somemore wei), smooth flow, and she was VERY relaxed. I admire her confidence, and her creativity in presenting her speech. Good one Esther.

Chee Hui's Speech

Although I don't know Chee Hui that well but I can recall his persuasive speech very well. I can say that he is quite a shy and quiet person.

Chee Hui's speech on animal testing's points are not bad. He was VERY nervous though. But after he came back from his 2 minutes break, he did not bad. Hand gestures were good. But lack of eye contact.

It is normal because everyone has stage fright! Follow what Miss Cheryl said, practice in front of few of your friends and then you won't get so nervous on that day.

As a conclusion, DON'T BE SHY CHEE HUI! We are all your classmates! And we are all here to learn these skills! All the best on your next presentation!

Cheers!

Leena's Speech

Owh hello guys! Janice here. :)

Alright I would like to comment on Leena's speech as hers is the one that really grabs my attention. Well I really do agree that her mock speech is the best because she brings just the correct amount of emotions and that really made me feel her aches. Her voice too, pulls the crowds because the class had been so quiet and cold.

For the real presentation she did express a little more on her more personal life thus it doesn't really connects with the feelings we should have.It had been more of a family issue than the feeling of distraught and pitiness. But I still love her voice tho.

Overall her gestures and body language are okay. I think she had been paying attention to them and she seemed very confident, well-prepared. I think Leena can improve more in making the speech much more memorable by organizing the tactics to tackle with audiences' emotions. Not forgetting maybe you can slow down a lil bit on these emotional topics? Hee.
Smiles are good on the face but keeping the smile there doesn't seem to help audience to connect more so yea, better expressions would be great!

Either way, I think she did a great job for both of her speeches. It must've took her great courage to pour it out and share feelings with the whole entire class. Aww~you're a really tough girl out there! I would've teared so badly if it was me!

Keep it up Leena!

Review on Esther's Persuasive Speech.

Hi ppl.
Here's a little review on the speech that I personally found very interesting; which is the speech given by Esther.

Oh before I comment further, Congratulations Esther for your internship presentation =)

I found that Esther's speech was interesting because:

1. It was the topic that she chose that made everyone open up their minds and ears to listen to what she have to say. Polygamy should be legalized. I did not know of what polygamy was until she actually told me the meaning in her speech. And that now, I'm very clear of what polygamy is all about. And that her objective of the speech reached me.

2. I think that putting up pictures to let us all see on the different categories on polygamy was something that opened up my mind. And without those pictures, I dont think i could understand the different types of polygamy. [But, I think it could be improved if it was put up on slides, so that everyone could see a clearer picture]

3. I admired the way she has persuaded us to make polygamy legalized. Overall gestures fit the speech very well.

That's all I have to say.
Congrats Esther for the good speech =)

Amy :)

Review on Keith.

Keith, very hyper boy. He immediately walked in by saying "I'm not sorry for what I'm wearing today". He wore a pink shirt, covered with a formal top, a skinny black jeans, topped with AX belt. Not forgetting is golden mohawk!

Be yourself! That was his whole idea of the speech and he definitely dressed up for it.

Keith's speech was good. He was comfortable with the space around him because he walked from one end of the class to the other. He did not neglect any corner of the audience. However, his nervousness appealed a little in the beginning as he stuttered through his pronunciation.

These are the minor things that brings down a good speaker but Keith has improved a lot compared to his first speech. If we were to look at how persuasive he was, it wasn't that convincing to apply it to everyone. That's because of his content structure. He didn't arrange it well and information he said was already known. There weren't additional content that could twist our minds to believe that we should be ourselves. Nevertheless, he delivered his details well for the audience to grasp what he says.

But I like the end of his speech, where he used his aunt and uncle as an example. He asked his aunt about when his uncle first farted in front of her, and it was the first time they met itself.

I think Keith should really take time to look at his topic from different perspective. He might find an approach where to trigger people's reaction towards his topic of "Being Yourself." Even though his content weren't strong but I could see that he really practices what he preach. From the beginning of the speech itself he was showing his personality.

In general, Keith impressed me well enough to remember him during his speech and for me to write this review. So yes, for him to be himself during his speech somehow persuaded me that he was being himself.

Signing off,
angeline t.
