Music Today: Not For Kids (Research Material)

The Sexualisation of Culture

Taken from: http://myarticlesunite.wordpress.com/2010/05/25/the-sexualisation-of-culture/
By Dr Linda Papadopoulos

20th May 2010

Driving my little girl to school the other morning, we had the radio playing in the background as usual.
But while I chatted to my seven-year-old about preparing her costume for the school’s open day, I began to notice the lyrics of the song that was playing.
‘Hey rude boy, is you big enough? Hey rude boy can you get it up?’ sang American pop star Rihanna.
Had it not been for my daughter’s presence in the car, I probably wouldn’t have batted an eyelid. After all, it was a mainstream station and she’s a mainstream singer.
So as I fumbled to change stations it hit me that this was just another instance of how desensitised we have become to the sexual language and imagery that pervades our everyday lives.
Our children are surrounded by messages and images that aren’t intended for them. But these messages are so prevalent they can’t avoid them.
It’s not just the obvious things that we see around us – the padded bras for eight-year-olds and the pole-dancing kits in toy departments – that can sexualise children.
LORRAINE CANDY: How do you tell teachers your child’s late because a Quaver got stuck in the printer?
It’s as Dr Maddy Coy, a sociologist from London Metropolitan University, puts it: ‘The background noise of sexualisation that is directed at adults but is available to and absorbed by children’ that is so problematic.
Girls jokingly now call each other ‘slut’ oblivious to the fact that it’s actually a deeply insulting sexual label.
Billboards and posters on buses and in high streets display women in the sort of explicit spread-eagled poses that a generation ago would only have been seen in top-shelf magazines.
But they’re not selling sex. They’re selling ice cream or shoes.
TV programmes shown well before the watershed hour of 9pm are littered with sexual references. But one of the worst offenders are song lyrics. With their drip, drip effect, they form the context to children’s lives. And the effect is deeply disturbing.
It’s cumulative, it’s powerful and it’s sending a terribly unhealthy message to children, and young girls in particular.
Music plays a big part in shaping our children. Kids aspire to emulate pop stars and the lifestyles and fashions they promote. Research shows that pre-teens and young teenagers listen to music for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours a day.
A recent report from the American Psychological Society noted the increasing tendency of popular song lyrics to sexualise women or refer to them in a derogatory manner.
They give graphic examples from popular mainstream artists like the Pussycat Dolls (‘Don’tcha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?’) and rapper 50 Cent (‘I tell hos [slang for prostitutes] all the time, Bitch get in my car’).
And far from being confined to rap music, the psychologists point out that lyrics and videos across all genres sexualise and objectify women.
Analysing themes and content from hundreds of music videos, it’s obvious that the portrayal of sexuality in popular music has become both less subtle and more explicit.
Just look at rap artist Nelly swiping a credit card through a young woman’s buttocks (Tip Drill). Or a woman being stripped naked and thrown onto a prison cell bed (Lady Gaga, Telephone.)
Or women being walked on leashes (P. I. M. P. by 50 cent). Particularly worryingly, the women in videos are rarely allowed to actively participate. They don’t sing or play an instrument.
They are purely decorative objects. It all serves to shape teenagers’ views on women.
And it’s unhealthy to say the least. Meanwhile, in an article in the April 2009 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers looking at the associations between song lyrics and teenage sexual behaviour found that exposing young teens to lyrics that describe degrading sex was independently associated with teenagers starting sex younger and having more partners.
When this is considered in light of the fact that several studies have established links between early sexual activity, poor sexual health, teenage pregnancy, and degrading sexual practices it becomes evident why we need to address how media and pop culture messages affect attitudes and behaviours
Stripping sex of any commitment or emotion, and where one partner had power over the other, creates an unhealthy view of sex in vulnerable teenagers.
And that’s why the issue of sexualisation is much more complex than is often reported. It’s not simply about children learning about sex too early. After all, kids have a normal curiosity about their developing sexuality and that is both developmentally appropriate and healthy.
The real problem is when girls are presented with an unbalanced stereotyped point of view about who they ought to be and how they ought to perform in relationships. It’s when they are made to feel that there is little alternative to aspiring to the ‘ideals’ of being hot and sexually desirable.
Even where women are the stars, they are often presented and portrayed in an overtly sexual way.
An analysis of the main themes projected in music videos found that violence occurs in 56.6 per cent of cases and visual presentations of sexual intimacy in over 75 per cent. And that’s across the board. From rap to country, no area is immune.
More than 30 years ago, cultural theorist Marshall McLuhan pointed out that we perceive the media’s effect on us as poorly as fish perceive the water they swim in.
In other words, the music is so prevalent and we are so desensitised, we simply don’t realise just what impact it is having on us.
Young women should be free to enjoy their sexuality when they feel ready for it and not before. We also need to provide new meanings of masculinity for young men that are not based solely on sexual conquest.
To do that we need to listen – really listen – to the sexualised background noise that surrounds us and act on what we hear to protect our children.

Music Today: Not For Kids (Analysis)

Based on the survey I've done; some complication happened as I wasn't able to get in contact with the juniors and as well as, not everyone answered the survey. Only an average 40% of people answered my survey. And I thank you. :)

~~
Children these days are not like us or our parents back then. They are much quicker in understanding things as well as much quicker at being influence; be it good things or bad things. Yes, probably they won’t understand the complete meaning of what Rihanna is singing in Rude Boy or what My Chemical Romance (MCR) sings in their song Teenagers, but slowly, they will learn to understand what it means. If not by you explaining to them what’s the real meaning of disco stick or why someone wants to get into someone else’s panties as sung by 3OH!3 in My First Kiss, these kids, these future generations will go online and check the lyrics.
When people listen to songs like Hotel Room by Pitbull or Love Game by Lady Gaga, they know how the artists are like thus they tend to picture some very ‘interesting’ video in their heads. Imagine your younger siblings watching whatever video you’re playing in your head, surely you would straight away change the channel and tell them that they shouldn’t watch such things are they are not ready. But, these kids are fast learners, when we were 9 years old, not all of us know how to use the internet, but now, they have their own facebook or what not. They know how to excess youtube and there they are able to watch whatever you told them not to.
Even censorship doesn’t work nowadays. Clearly when MCR sings “They say all teenagers scare the living **** out of me,” we could easily tell what the censored word was. But now some music artists, they don’t want their songs to be censored so they wrote songs where they use everyday words and make them into a whole new meaning. Songs with double meanings, how cool and how bad is that? Besides picking up foul words from movies or video games, kids these days pick up foul words from songs too.
So what can be done to stop songs from spreading negativity to other innocent minds? Censorship is not that effective so put that aside. People can’t go up to music artists and tell them their songs are giving bad influence to underage children, its freedom of expression, why should they hold back? Based on my research, 81% agreed that radio stations should filter the songs that they play on the radio, but the other 19% argued that if radio stations do that, they will lose a lot of listeners. So, what can people do to protect their children?

speech summary

The bad effect of watching television series to house wives
A very good morning to Miss Cheryl and my classmates. The title of my speech today is the bad effect of watching television series to house wives. As all of us know, there are so many programmes shown in d television nowadays that there are no chances of us getting bored on weekdays nor weekends because we are occupied with the list of television programme to watch. But somehow we are always busy with our daily life unlike some of our mothers who are keen of actually sitting in front of the television for hours just for a particular television series that she is addicted to.

Why do I say that watching television series bring bad effect on house wives? That because i’ve witnessed this phenomena occurring in my home where my mum would totally neglect us just because she was too busy watching her favourite television series. At times television series brings unrealistic expectations to d viewers and in my context to house wives particularly as all this can make a house wives to much more dramatic than it really is. Besides that, by watching television series like desperate house wives the house wives would desire for status as those drama’s are about wealth, status and power

Internet advertisement is better than traditional advertisement.

A very good afternoon to Miss Cherly and my beloved classmate. My name is Tan Lay Theng. Today my speech topic is about “internet advertisement is better than traditional advertisement”. Before I going to start my speech, may I ask everyone do you all know what traditional advertisement is? Traditional advertisement is like newspaper ads, magazine ads, TV ads and so on. First at all, I expect that all of you have been noticed at advertisement. But which one do you guys always prefer between internet advertisement and traditional advertisement?

In 21st century, the internet has become known as a medium for advertising. But based on my lasting of survey result, majority of there are still lot peoples are prefer to traditional advertisement. They said that information of traditional advertisement is details than internet advertisement and it is more reliable. They also said that some pop up advertisements are quite irritating and assumes that it is virus.

However, I personally not agree of that and still prefer internet advertisement more than traditional advertisement. Internet advertisement is much more low-cost to audience. Well, I bet everyone is a heavy internet user. So, don’t you think it is better when using internet because when you see the click- through side bar, you can just directly click it and some directly have their link to website. So, you just move on your little finger to click the link then you directly can go through your advertisement website instead of going book store buy newspaper or magazine to find out the ads. Internet advertisements will more updating than traditional advertisement where if they need updating an ad, it usually just a very simple matter that your ads can be update quickly and easily. Unlike TV commercials which must be periodically updated. For example, a company wants to promote their new product to public. If using traditional advertising like TV commercial, actors had to be hired, script had to be written while newspaper or magazine, they need to go for publication and decide which day you want to release your ads. So, it will need such period of time to release their advertisement. So, through internet we can easily find out update advertisements.

Besides that, graphic! Graphic of internet advertisement is the main effectives to audience. This is because the graphic of the internet advertisement always will better than traditional advertisement. Furthermore, nowadays along with latest technologies, internet advertisements can put images, video and also audio. It also has been improved by adding animation to make the advertisement become much more attractive to convey messages and information effectively to audience. By the way, some advertisements have provided forum and feedback to audience. It is welcome to you guys to voice out your opinion or critical about the certain ads. Why this ad using this colorful graphic? Why using this animation instead of put image? You can leave your comment or your suggestion and share with other foreign friends also. Well, you guys have been asked from lecturer that each week need to find different three ads and write out your opinion and suggestion of the ads right? This is why lecturer wanted us to do to help us improve our view and judgment to the ads and learn more from it.

Internet advertisement is share to global audience where it is no longer restricted to a certain location. However, traditional advertisement will be restricted in home country. Internet advertisements have more variety from different countries, so we could get more experienced of different approaches of ads. These days’ companies are often using internet to advertise their product because it is effective of create their brand awareness.

This is my speech for today. Thank you!

Su Ann: Analysis

What are eating disorders? According to the National Eating Disorders Association (2010), eating disorders “include extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues”.
According to the American research group, Anorexia Nervosa & Related Eating Disorders, Inc., one out of every four college-aged women uses unhealthy methods of weight control – including fasting, skipping meals, excessive exercise, laxative abuse, and self-induced vomiting.
The pressure to be thin is also affecting young girls: the Canadian Women's Health Network warns that weight control measures are now being taken by girls as young as 5 and 6. American statistics are similar. Several studies, such as one conducted by Marika Tiggemann and Levina Clark in 2006 titled “Appearance Culture in Nine- to 12-Year-Old Girls: Media and Peer Influences on Body Dissatisfaction,” indicate that nearly half of all preadolescent girls wish to be thinner, and as a result have engaged in a diet, or are aware of the concept of dieting.
The media most certainly contributes to dieting. The media encourages size discrimination. The media, while not exactly the main cause of the development of eating disorders, does however promote the obsession of being thin … and as a result, affecting body image and indirectly affects the growth of these sickness.
Famous film and television actresses are becoming younger, taller, and thinner. Everywhere you turn, you are inevitably bombarded by images of thin, sexy models – on the cover of magazines, in music videos, on print advertisements for major clothing brands. The images on the television and on the big screen spend countless hours and tons of money brainwashing us into being thin and beautiful, and losing weight in order for people to like us better.
Celebrities are no less susceptible to eating disorders than the rest of the population. For example, Mary-Kate Olsen, Linday Lohan, Nicole Richie.
Diet advertisements on television, in magazines and newspapers, everywhere continually drill the message that losing weight will make us happier into its audience.
Women’s magazines are full of articles urging that if they can just lose those last twenty pounds, they’ll have it all – the perfect marriage, loving children, happy family and a rewarding career.
The underlying message in all this is; we are consistently given the message that we are just not good-looking enough, pretty enough or thin enough.
The media certainly has an important role to play in the messages impressionable, young people receive about the cultural ideal of physical perfection. The media and body image have long been dependent upon each other to set styles and trends. For years, society has let the media set the standards on how men, and particularly women, are supposed to look in order to be attractive.
Encouraging the media to present more diverse and real images of people with more positive messages about health and self-esteem may not eliminate eating disorders entirely, but it would help reduce the pressures many people feel to make their bodies conform to one ideal, and in the process, reduce feelings of body dissatisfaction.

ME speechhhy !!! =) YOUTUBE babeee

YouTube is where dreams come true

A very good morning to my Lecturer, Miss Cheryl and my beloved friends. Hi, my name is Amanda Ng. My speech for this awesome morning is about YouTube. I’m sure all of you here know what’s YouTube right? Coz you are all mass comers and mass comers means creative people. Creative people mean artistic people, imaginative minds… And so, YouTube will be a place where our talents will be appreciated.

My speech today will be entitled YouTube is where dreams come true. Why do I say so? Because youtube.com is trashed by millions and millions of video uploads each day. They have all sorts of videos, from Official music videos to comedians’ channel. The thing is that anyone can post their videos on youtube.com. It’s all free of charge and you don’t need to be a famous dude to post your own videos. Videos can be made anywhere! As long as you have got a video camera, then it’s done. Ready to be shared to everyone!

YouTube is massive! They have got bazillions of viewers. As mass comers, this is an awesome opportunity to share what we are capable of that other people doesn’t realize. Or can be said as youtube.com is a great place to show off your skills. I have done surveys previously and I have found out that majorities are signed in to YouTube. That’s good! But most of them admitted that they don’t post any videos, then that’s not good! Do something! You might just get lucky.

Look at Marie Digby! Do you know her? She took her guitar and sat on the floor nothing special, just in her hall. Then she started to sing one of the hits by Rihanna. Her subscribers increased tremendously since that video has been posted. Marie Digby is now a verified singer with her own album being spread throughout the world. Just a single post! And boom! And there you have it.

If you can’t sing, that’s alright. Playing instruments it is already great. Duet with your friends! Or maybe start posting tutorials for the latest and hottest music on the timeline. I, myself do view tutorials on YouTube. The piano piece, guitar chords and all. Most of the songs I play are all learnt from the YouTube. Once I even went to search for 10 best ways to post for a camera. They did it really well, they had a hot model standing there and showing you how to position your face, your body and your legs. That’s really awesome! Oh and YouTube can really give you the money. I saw some of the tutorials; they have links on where to download their piano or guitar sheets and will be charged like around 5 bucks each.

Can’t really sing, don’t really know any instruments? Then dance! We have a very an example here like Michelle, she had her whole YouTube profile uploaded with all her dance videos. And they are all viewed by like thousands of them. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for her getting popular. Oh and they do have dancing tutorials done there.

Thinking twice posting on YouTube? If all that doesn’t work for you, why not posting fan-made videos? A model, named Amber Lee Ettinger posted a video called “I have a crush on …. Obama”. Her viewers shoot up straight away, and then she was offered the role, Babe of the month on Playboy. Maybe Fan-made doesn’t work; you go for hater’s video. Like Jason Chao, Who criticized Justin Bieber and thus, getting lots of fans pulled from Justin Bieber to himself. And yeap, he had all the fame he wants.

Most of you guys here have got a really great sense of humor. Like Kiru with his funny actions, Irene with all her facial expression, Syiaw suang with all her hokkien jokes and Aaron, gosh! He really makes people laugh. Like the Annoying Orange. Have you guys heard of it? He’s an orange with a human feature. He makes fun of every other fruits and vegetables. If not, go check it out then. It’s really hilarious.

Other singers like Cherice, Zee Avi and not forgetting Justin bieber who posted up their videos just for a few of their friends to see. The next thing they know, theirs videos are all shared around on other sites like the MySpace, Facebook, and Blogs and so on. Talent scouters will eventually search for talents on YouTube and saw them. Now, they are all signed under famous recording company. It’s indeed a dream come true for them. So why not trying up on YouTube? I’m already doing it! Keep your fingers crossed. Thank you

Survey questions

1) in your opinion , what is the media violence?
2)how violence in the media affects children?
3)does the children identify with the aggressor or the victim?
4)does the children see television violence as realistic?
5)In your opinion, do you think that children who view violent acts are more expected to show aggressive behaviour but also fear that the world is scary and that something bad will happen to them?

Speech summary

My speech is about the effect of media violence towards children. E reason why did I choose the topic because children today are the future us.being the future pillar for our country, this topic should be taken seriously because children today are very much expose to the technology today.but, being children, they tend to be very much influence to the violence in the media because children are still immature to decide for themselves and they do not have the capacity to compare the difference between media entertainment and the reality world.due to this, children are influence very much easier than adult.children who watches or plays violent movie or games have the increase of aggressive in their behaviour.they tend to imitate the character from the movie and act like them.this might lead to more danger if they continue this behaviour to their teenager follow up being a adult. Another effect they might have if the fear of the people living around them.parents should take this seriously and try to do a conclude a decision to help and guide the children today. When I was called in front, I was nervous but somehow I control my fear by walking around. I did not time my speech so I think it was a bit dragy.but I think I managed to present well.

Persuasive speech reviews [Ivan]

Kiru: Kiru's speech was on E learning. Personally i thought Kiru did a really good job on his speech. he managed to got his point through to us within the time limit, using lament terms to further allow us to understand better. As usual Kiru grabs our attention with his clear vocals, his humor works no matter the topic. Is interesting that he can be serious and at the same time cracking us up with a straight face. He does get out of character at times due to our laughing but gets back in fast. so overall a very well done speech made by Kiru.

Michelle: Michelle's speech was on non verbal communication. she starts off her speech with a dull introduction which catches our attention to only spring back to her usual cheeriness. Her vocals are acceptable and body gesture are rather animated. I thought she presented pretty well and got the message across to us about the different types of non verbal communications.

Hau Neng: Hau Neng did well on his speech. His vocals were clear and his facial expression to express some of the examples were good. But it would be better if he were to state his topic from the beginning of the speech as I couldn't really grasp what he was trying to persuade.

My Speech "Online Newspaper Is Better Than Newspaper"

Good morning to Ms.Cheryl and all my friends, today I would like to present a sppech with a simple title of "Online Newspaper Is Better Than Newspaper". From my survey, I found that more than more of the people will still prefer to read the tradionation newspaper and why wouldn't they choose online newspaper? So, I am going to briefly expalin what is online newspaper. Basically, online newspaper is a newspaper that not in a printed material while they exist on the internet. For an example, www.wasynewspaper.com is the world largest online newspaper archive which contained 10,000 links to online newspaper sorted by country and states.

Why I would like to say online newspaper is better than newspaper? Firstly, as compare to newspaper, it is free of charge where you no need to spend your money to buy the daily newspaper. It can helps you to save the daily cost.

Second, online news are kept on updating 24 hours and it provides the latest breaking news at the first time once the incident happened. You can have the oppurtunity to read the news at the very first moment ans share the news with your friend immediately without waiting for the second day newspaper release. Other than that, the pictures of online news are much more clear and than the printed newspaper and the color is much more nicer compare to the boring color printed in newspaper which is grey and white only. Beside of this, the recording video also provided about the incident can let the audience watch and listen to it so that audience can comprehend the news in more details.

What is so special about online news again? Online news provided a forum for the audience to leave their comments and suggeations. It is an effective way for the audience to release their feeling such as angry, sad towards the news on the forum and to share their opinions with others.

As everthing is goes green nowadays to save the environment, I would like to encourage people to read online news because it is paperless. By reading online news, we can save a lot of tress and reduce the pollution. Just imagine in a day how many newspaper have to be printed around the world? Thas was a huge amount of usage in the paper.

I believe that in the future, as the advancement of the Internet Technology and the improvement of Internet speed, online newspaper will become more easier and convenient to the audiemce and it might become our future newspaper as it will replace newspaper in some day.

This is my speech for today, thank you

Hidden Message in Nowadays Metal Songs: Epilogue II

It's three in the morning people! :) Hahaha anyhow, here in this post I would like to conclude my survey results bla bla bla and thank you so much for sparing your time answering mine ♥

So, upon my surveys through Facebook, e-mails and MSN - nine out of seventeen students who have answered my survey (this excludes the ones do not answer my survey) said the first thought of metal (rock) music is noisy. And many too dislike the genre because of the melody and have never had an interest in the genre before.

Upon my survey papers, nine out of thirty people love and found that metal genre is an awesome genre and tend to scream whenever they listen to it. Somehow, the remaining of these thirty people felt annoyed by the melody, drum beats and singer's screamer as they could not understand such things. Trust me, when I first heard Drop Dead Gorgeous band, I literally wanted to bang head on the wall but as you see, because of this band I started to listen such bands like the Devil Wears Prada, Emarosa, Decypher Down and many more. No doubt these bands are an amazing band. But hey, Christianity bands are good too like Skillt and Falling Up. Heehehhe

So people, do remember - if you are stressed, just blast your ears with music!

Reflection of my Speech

SORRY I FORGOT TO POST ON BLOG!
I saved it on my desktop!

I think that I have improved on decreasing my anxiety when speaking in a crowd, I find that I better with my Best Moment speech in the cafeteria compared to my persuasive speech in the Studio, because it seemed more formal and the pressure was on because we were being graded. I think that with the use of cue cards and practicing before I give my speech really helped, and the words I need to use in my speech don't float away anymore. I have learnt to be less tense and I have learnt how to use my hand gestures and eye contatcs better this time compared to last time as I always avoid looking into people's eyes. I find that anxiety is just a state of mind and it really is not that hard if we just learn to grasp that these bunch of people are no different than just one person.

Comment after doing my speech

First of all, i would like to apologise for posting the post so late as i had just finished doing the mid-autumn carnival clean-up work after the event. As like what Miss had told me, i personally really think that, i had improve quite a lot from the first day of the class uptill today. I've learn to overcome my fear towards the anonymous and also learn to be confident while doing my speech. But one thing i personally think that i'm not doing well in is my tone of delivering the speech. I really impress to how Thina did his speech, he had good sense of humour, he had great confident, and he did really well in term of varying his tone of delivering his speech. I think there are still plenty of space for me to improve in the next presentation like stop playing with my hands while giving my speech. And next time, if i really want to use drawings to convey my message to the audience, i'll make sure the drawings are big enough for everybody to see, not just only for the person who are sitting close to me or in front. All in all, i think that i have given all my best in delivering the speech, and i will still do even better in my next speech.

Nonverbal = Vitality

As many of you would know, my topic was on nonverbal language. Taking a stand on nonverbal language speaks louder than verbal connotations while communicating a message across.

Now how many of you know that in a normal conversation of 2 people, less than 35% of the social connotations are actually delivered by words? So what happens to the other 65%? These 65% is in fact conveyed through nonverbal channels – facial expressions, eye contact, tone of voice and postures and gestures.

With that said, why would it be this way? Lemme straighten it out for you! There are for reasons: Repetition, Contradict, Substitution & Accenting.

Repetition – Nonverbal cues like facial expressions can repeat the message of the speaker’s verbal words.
~ Save the trouble of repeating orally on a fact to prove a point with correct facial expressions, thereby enhancing and persuading people with the message.

Contradict – Eye contact plays a huge role for one to decipher the truth of what the speaker is conveying. Tone of voice can also contradict as you listen to the pitch where it can really provide gentle but powerful hints of one’s true feelings and thoughts.
~If one is talking with a downcast look, you are able to immediately point out the speaker is deceiving you, even though his words are otherwise.

Substitution – Gestures are woven into our lives that every use of the hands instantly expresses ourselves subconsciously. Hence, with the automatic gestures, it replaces the verbal words to paint an even vivid message.
~ When one is confident and is sure of what he’s delivering, he would exert a confident and brisk manner, making it easier to persuade the audience because the audience would think he knows his points well and it’s accurate because there are no signs of nervousness or deception.

Accenting – With the proper tone of voice, these nonverbal forms would accentuate or underline a verbal message.
~ Meaning to say, the voice and its pitch and rhythm would further emphasize the core of the message one is trying to convey.

When Demosthenes, a Greece public speaker was questioned what’s the first part of public speaking, he replied, “action”; his second answer was “action”; and his third response was “action”.

Now that you know my main points, to the 22% of people who thinks that verbal speaks louder than nonverbal, I hope I have convinced, no wait, persuaded, you to think otherwise!

Regulating of foul and crude languages in media

Vulgarity or better known as foul or crude languages are actually a compilation of non discipline and rude words use to insult people. It has now increased increase to an alarming rate where almost each and every movie or song has foul languages in it. Constant use of these words in media has will have a really bad effect on people especially kids as they are easily influence and they will grow up to be rude and disrespectful. vulgarity and foul languages should not be implemented in movies, TV shows or radio as it does more harm than good. It will only destroy the discipline and the mentality of the future generation.

 AGE:

GENDER:

1)      How often do hear foul languages in media (movies, TV programs, radio and etc.) even      though they’re censored?

2)      Do you think that vulgarity are necessary or of importance in media? Why?

3)      Do you think that swearing and crude words have a bad influence on people especially young kids? Why?

4)      Do you think that the media industry is putting in foul languages as means of marketing purposes?

5)      Do you think that the censorship of media or the age rating for movies are working efficiently? Why?

6)      Should these contents be removed from the media from your opinion? Why?

My reflection on my speech "Magazines born shopaholic"

I was the first to present as I volunteered myself and I wasn't ready at all to be frank. I was suppose to bring magazines along with me during my speech as i think by showing evidence to the crowd would be even more convincing compared to only by stating it out verbally. I am not nervous but I am not well prepared and that is my biggest mistake.

In my speech, i think I'm lack of proves and points of argument. I didn't convince my audience instead I was just stating out the point of my speech. I did not grab my audience's attention and make them focus on my topic. I was all over everywhere and the flow of my speech was not good.I also did not provide much information to my audience which this is one of the weakness of my speech.

I might get good marks on my body gesture and grooming but that is not enough. I was very disappointed on my speech as I think I have ruin it and I did not do it as what I've planned to do.I left out a lot of points untold  which makes me feel very disappointed.I hope on my next speech I will be well prepared and tries to improve in my way of speaking.

Ps: Convincing people formally isn't an easy task for me.:)

False Media Images Negative grip on Society

Media have been made accessible to people in every aspect of their daily lives. However, when abused, the power of media can harm the general population. Biased media tend to make people strive to be someone else's idea of perfect while subconsciously ignoring their own goals. The majority of media today often present the perfect body to the public, hoping that consumers will strive to achieve fitness using a certain product or idea.
Compared to the new ads of today, the advertisement contains a picture of a man before he started using the specific supplement and after he use the supplement for a certain amount of weeks.  From what is shown, the usage of the supplement helped the person to achieve a better, more defined, ideal body that is desired for today.  What is interesting about all these advertisements is that the developer assumes that the photo of the muscle man use is how everyone should strive to become.  The advertisement also tries to emphasize the time taken to achieve the physique pictured. Also, with all warning labels, in this advertisement, the warnings are so conveniently placed on the bottom of the page in little print.

Along with emotional conflicts, those influenced by the media have encountered physical problems, including bulimia, anorexia, and the employment of harmful dietary plans. Those consumers given a false impression about a product through various forms of media are the ones who suffer most from our society's portrayal of the perfect body. After being influenced by a television commercial or a magazine, certain people in this world will purchase an item hoping that the same success shown in the medium will be had by them as well. Every day, ugly people wear sensual cologne. Mentally, some may feel an improvement but in reality nothing has changed.  The mental effects of the mass media's portrayal of the perfect body can cause people to resort to unhealthy methods of losing weight to attain that athletic look that so many desire. Bulimia is a food disorder caused by mental insecurities.

Doctors recommend that bulimic people see a psychiatrist because the illness's symptoms, including compulsive exercise and throwing up, can cause one's body to become short on electrolytes, which is extremely unhealthy. Anorexia is a similar condition in which one loses exorbitant amounts of weight often by eating very little and vomiting the amount of food that is actually consumed.

The bottom line is that people should make up their minds that they will not be negatively influenced by the media. In doing this, the public can view media for what it truly is a means of conveying information or supplying entertainment. Good common sense should tell a woman that the overly attractive person in an advertisement is a model and should be admired for her beauty, all women are not required to look like her to be attractive. The process of differentiating fact from fiction in advertising can not be described on paper. It can only happen in people's minds, one at a time. The media's negative grip on society can be greatly decreased if people remember just one thing what is on television is only an advertisement.

My reflection towards my speech

Like everyone I was nervous as it was my first persuasive speech IL be doing, On for a first time speaker I did pretty well but i was kind of very rude towards my audience which I think should not be practiced next time around because I don't want to make them having a negative impression towards me.

After seeing Caryn showing some evidence of pictures for her speech it made me think I should have done that as well since my speech was involving advertisement. I personally I have not created much awareness but rather entertain the crowds much more.  I should have tried to find some cases to support my claim and I made a school boy error when admitting "I forget something" because it is advised that speakers should not do that cause the audience doesn't know that you forget anything in the first place.

I lost 1.5 marks on grooming which I think is a waste because it was easy marks, so I guess i need to be more presentable next time around. From what I can see there is a major different in me as a speaker, im becoming more and more confident as days goes on and i know what the crowds wants and I think i can deliver it to them but saying that there is a lot of room improve. Best speech ever that i made not sure but it wont be the last ...  ^^

my speech for that day. Woohoo~~~

Good Afternoon to Miss Cherly and fellow classmates, today I would like to present a speech and title with “Nowadays, Parents should speak English to Children”. Why I say that nowadays parents should speak English to children, because as everyone knows that English is an international language of diplomacy, business, science, technology, banking, computing, medicine, engineering, and tourism in the world. Most of the countries will provide the English education to everyone as English is useful in the whole world.

Furthermore, why I say that parents speak English to children is important? Firstly, it is because like what I said previously, English is an international language. Other than, it is an international language, it also because good for their children in future such as in education, career and communicate with everyone in the whole world. Why is important to their education, as you can see that after finished our secondary school life, whenever you going to which colleges or universities and mostly of them will using English to teach all the syllabus. For who are using Mandarin, Cantonese or other languages except English will not that easier to adapt to using English in teaching. Just like me, I’m speaking Mandarin with family. So, sometimes I feel a bit difficult to understand what my lecturer talking about. Other than that, in my writing and speaking I always use the incorrect grammar. I know I can improve it by myself by read and watch more English books, blogs, newspaper and videos. But, if I using English in my life since when I was young, I think I will not facing the problems much as like now. By the way, I’m not blaming my parents, just what I want to say is nowadays most of the parents are having high education although for some are do not have high education, at least they will know how to speak a bit English. Some parents will say that they don’t know how to speak English but they still can learn as now a lot of tuition centre provide those English course to everyone. I just want to advice those parents nowadays using English to their children as good for their future.

Secondly, it is also good for their career in the future. Nowadays, what job we are working must at least know some Basic English although just is a salesgirl or normal stall. So, for who work in those big companies using English too as it useful in their business. Most of the people nowadays are using English to communicate with each others. As you know, just like we going to shopping whenever we ask the salesman or salesgirl about question, at first we will using English to ask them question. Unless, some of them don’t know how to speak then only we change to others language.

Other than that, according to my survey majority of them agree with the statement talking English to their children in the future as they think that it is easier to them to communicate with others in education, career, and when go to others country. Just minority of them are not agreeing with the statement as they think that they should let their children know about their mother tongue. Yes, we have to let them know about their mother tongue. But it also have the way to let them remember, you can remind and talking about their mother tongue in once of time.

In my conclusion, I still will advice the parents nowadays should speak English to their children as what I said just now English is an international language. It is also easier to them in studies and careers in future.

That’s all for my speech today, thank you.

Speech summary -Raj-

My speech is tittle is Hollywood movies influences teenagers to practice pre-marital sex. My stand on topic was against pre-marital sex in hollywood movies. Movies these days are interesting and have unique storyline as it is enjoyable to watch, the modern era has brought many changes to movies storyline, scenes, graphics and the movie flow. The changes are made as time goes on according to the modern world but the tradition of movies never change it is still practiced, the types of tradition which said is movies which has a lot of sexual content it terms of the scenes. Example of movies such as American pie, obsessed and jenifer's body, there are many more movies which contains sexual scenes but most of it practices pre-marital sex which influences viewers and its not really a good idea. Pre-marital sex causes alot effects and it leads to abortion too sometimes, hollywood movies shall try to reduce or abolish pre-marital sex scenes as it brings a negative idea to viewers
